Liberty Christian Centre, our latest church plant in the Philippines, is thriving! Since returning home from Cyprus two and a half years ago, Pastor Mila Mendaros has established and led a flourishing church in the town of Victoria, Oriental Mindoro. Our partnership has been invaluable from the beginning, as we’ve supplied regular finances, counsel, oversight and friendship.
In December, we completed the purchase of a 1,800 square metre property for the church in the town’s centre. What a miracle! On the new property is a (former) Baptist Church building which seats 150 people, and an almost completed 2-bedroom home. Shop owners and customers will miss the happy congregation, who moved across town from the facility we had been renting, into their new home!
Already, the Church building needs extending. Two weeks ago when we visited to celebrate with Mila and the congregation, over 400 attended the Sunday morning service. Many of these are new believers; almost all of them come to the church regularly, and so we are now building wide verandas to shelter the overflow.
Basic things we need to immediately provide include chairs, fans and better ventilation for the extremely hot months ahead, raising some of the ground levels, and installing drainage to keep disease-bearing mosquitoes at bay. Our plans for this large property include extending and finishing the 2-bedroom house, building another much larger meeting facility, and opening a centre for children’s welfare and education – all as soon as we are able!
To assist Mila with discipling the key young leaders, Matt is preparing an online ministry training program which he will oversee. From April, each of these young leaders-in-training will receive basic computer tablets with the necessary programs installed, to make the online delivery of lessons and discussions possible. These young leaders are dedicated and gifted! What a privilege to help in this way.
From its beginning two and a half years ago, the church has served the community faithfully. We have re-built 90 homes for needy families after Hurricane Nona (January 2015). Mila is passionate about meeting the needs of the poor. Thousands of meals have been provided for families who are genuinely struggling to provide daily care for their children. We are considering some strategic assistance for families in greatest need.
This is a time of wonderful harvest! Please PRAY for Pastor Mila, her leaders and all of the various ministries they are involved in. Pray for the effective discipling of the many new believers.
